Integrated voltage regulator offers 97.5% efficiency
The IR3823 SupIRBuck integrated voltage regulator from International Rectifier is optimised for space constrained, energy efficient netcom, server and storage applications.
The device delivers up to 3A and is available in a 3.5 x 3.5mm package. IR says efficiencies in excess of 97.5% are obtainable for designs converting power from a 6V input to a 4.8V output.
The IR3823 also allows switching at up to 1.5MHz from a 12V supply. Featuring constant frequency and virtually jitter free operation, it is well suited to noise sensitive applications, while the higher bandwidth reduces component count to shrink pcb footprint.

Today's HBLEDs typically have a nominal current rating of 300mA to 700mA. As the envelope of light output is pushed, devices requiring more than an Ampere are appearing in the market. In all LEDs, due to the voltage-current relationship and the binning approach used by manufacturers, a constant current source is used for accurate control of the light output.
