If you are currently engaged in sexual activity (well, not at this EXACT moment but…) there are a ton of reasons why you should visit an STD clinic. Many STDs can and do have awful--and sometimes even deadly--repercussions. If there was a scale for awful, then infecting your significant other with herpes would probably be high atop that list. Herpes is mostly thought of as a hammer-over-your-head type disease, meaning that it must be obvious that you are infected. This is untrue, in fact, many people infected with the herpes virus are completely unaware that they are so.
Let's take a look at the facts, shall we? According to some reports, approximately one in nine Americans are currently positive for genital herpes. When it comes to oral herpes, these same reports say that a whopping 80% of Americans are positive. 80%! No matter who you are there is no denying that these are startling statistics. If visiting an STD clinic will lower your odds of contracting--or passing on--this awful disease, then there's no excuse for not visiting a clinic today.
Herpes are a real downer on the dating circuit according to the "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" handbook. Joking aside, here are the facts that you should be aware of when it comes to protecting yourself from this way too-common illness.
What are herpes?
Herpes are a series of viruses that even include chicken pox and shingles. When most people speak of herpes though, they are referring to one of two viruses. The HSV-1 virus causes oral herpes and the HSV-2 virus causes genital herpes.
What are the symptoms of herpes?
The first symptoms typically show up two days after infection and can be so mild that they hardly register. The infected area will be itchy and may burn or tingle. This is followed by an outbreak of blisters. Once these blisters break they form painful sores.
Do all infected individuals show symptoms?
No. According to some studies up to 60% of people who contract HSV-2 show no symptoms at all. These people may still easily pass the virus on to others. This is another reason why visiting an STD clinic for herpes testing is so important.
What is the testing procedure?
There are varying tests to determine if an individual is positive for herpes. These include the herpes virus antigen detection test, a herpes viral culture, the polymerase chain reaction test (or PCR), and the antibody test. A certified STD clinic will be able to determine the best option for you. _________________ test for stds |
