What are herpes?
Herpes are a series of viruses that even include chicken pox and shingles. When most people speak of herpes though, they are referring to one of two viruses. The HSV-1 virus causes oral herpes and the HSV-2 virus causes genital herpes.
What are the symptoms of herpes?
The first symptoms typically show up two days after infection and can be so mild that they hardly register. The infected area will be itchy and may burn or tingle. This is followed by an outbreak of blisters. Once these blisters break they form painful sores.
Do all infected individuals show symptoms?
No. According to some studies up to 60% of people who contract HSV-2 show no symptoms at all. These people may still easily pass the virus on to others. This is another reason why visiting an STD clinic for herpes testing is so important.
What is the testing procedure?
There are varying tests to determine if an individual is positive for herpes. These include the herpes virus antigen detection test, a herpes viral culture, the polymerase chain reaction test (or PCR), and the antibody test. A certified STD clinic will be able to determine the best option for you.
